Education is one of the most basic necessities to ensure the progress of a society and, subsequently, a nation. Attainment of higher education has long been a challenge for Indian nationals. Studies have shown that fewer than 40 percent of the adolescents in India continue on to university and only half of the overall population is literate. Moreover, only 25 percent of those who do graduate from tertiary education are deemed employable.
Distance Education, through the IGNOU courses, has certainly done well in India and in the other, mostly Asian, countries that it has become affiliates with. One of the main reasons behind this is the fact that students who live in far-flung areas now have easy access to education. Geographical and poor transport system limitations are not longer a hindrance to getting a degree.
Established in 1985 and considered the largest university in the world with so many IGNOU courses, the school hopes to promote and set standards for distance and open education in the country as well as serve as a national resource center that offers an avenue for research and training.
The study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University, which is popularly known as IGNOU, is situated in the premises of the college. You will find here Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) Masters, Bachelor, Phd, PG Diploma, Diploma and Research Courses:

The broad scope of courses offered has also helped in the success of the IGNOU. While the Indian government is keen on focusing on science and technology programs at the tertiary level, the options in the Open University are not limited to these. They have departments for Performing and Visual Arts as well as for the Humanities, like the School of Social Sciences, School of Gender Development Studies, and School of Social Work.
Since its founding, a huge percentage of the student population of India has been able to take advantage of the program, with over 2 million students enrolled in the courses. Further, several affiliate schools have been established in 35 countries abroad. At present, the IGNOU offers over 300 academic programs that are made up of 1100 courses at the certificate, diploma, and degree levels. Because of the vast number of courses that are available and the success it has had, the school was awarded and recognized as the countrys first Centre of Excellence for Distance Education in 1993.
